We are so proud to announce that our team debuted the O2C program in Singapore at Northlight Secondary School. It was really well received by both educators and students. This is a important milestone in our aspirations to empower every individual to play their part against climate change, the protection of our reefs and marine life. As the saying goes, "You do not know what you do not know." However, the ability to experience knowledge beyond the books is often limited to those who have the financial and physical capacity. This makes learning highly unequal. We believe we can close this gap. Experiential learning is vital in creating lasting impressions. Thus, our objective to bring the oceans to classrooms and beyond is make education about reefs, oceans and climate change, tangible.
The young minds from Northlight Secondary in Singapore were the first to experience this program and results were higher than what we expected. Students from Northlight often come from very challenging backgrounds from learning disabilities to unstable home. Thus, realistically for these students wanting to learn about the oceans or why we should protect our reefs is the last thing one their minds. In fact many of these students will not be able to travel, let alone undertake scuba diving in the near future due to their challenges circumstances so when they enthusiastically took away key learning points from the experience, it was highly encouraging. The students were both emotionally and intellectually vested and were able to answer complex questions about corals, impacts from human activities and marine life.
While we understand that nothing can substitute the real experience of diving, the O2C program comes close enough to inspire these students to think about how they can make tiny changes in their lives to reduce plastic pollution in our oceans. That is a big win.
